Story Synopsis
Conquering the Beast is a gripping biographical film that chronicles the life of Scott Mendes, a renowned professional bull rider who rose to fame in the rugged world of rodeo. Born in Visalia, California, on July 4th, 1969, Mendes was introduced to bull riding at age five on his family’s ranch, where his grandfather and father, both rodeo enthusiasts, nurtured his passion for the sport. The film follows his tumultuous journey from a young cowboy riding calves to winning the 1997 PRCA World Championship, capturing the raw intensity of bull riding and the personal struggles he faced, including his parents’ divorce and a turbulent relationship with his mother. Through stunning reenactments and heartfelt storytelling, the movie portrays Mendes’ relentless determination to conquer not only the most savage and raging bulls but also the personal demons that threatened to derail his career.

As Mendes achieves rodeo stardom, the film delves into his transformative spiritual awakening following the tragic death of his friend and fellow rider, Brent Thurman, in 1994. This pivotal moment leads Mendes to become committed to his life of faith, redirecting his life’s purpose toward mentoring young riders and spreading faith through his Western Harvest Ministries and Conquering the Beast Pro Rodeo League. The narrative weaves together his triumphs in the arena with his commitment to guiding others, highlighting his role as a pastor, husband, and father. With powerful performances and authentic rodeo sequences, Conquering the Beast celebrates Mendes’ legacy as a champion who found strength in faith, inspiring others to conquer their own beasts, both in and out of the arena.
